Degen DE17 test

It seems  that this radio has been lost as my daughter  uses it quite often
for dancing with some FM dance radio stattions...She esily forgets what sshe does!

A review of degen  de17

....and comparison with  108 and 1126 ….

Degen  DE17 is my last  radio  as a successor and replacement of the  nearly  'defunct'  DE108,

As noticed in the de108 page of this site  solder inside the PCB  is possibly broken causing the  radio  to lose its AM (MW and SW too) sensitivity. I could  temporarily  restore this problem by pressing along the sides or on the volume control on the rear  side  . Due to SMD technology , it is beyond my abilities to repair it.

Looking on the web and especially  in blogordie  I found the De17 having the same design with 108 and still using the  now 'famous' all in one DSP circuit  SI 7434IC used by Degen /Tecsun  in their latest models .This made me more curious on replacing my de108 with this .

Although my questions in
blogordie  have not  completely  replied, this made me purchase this model form the  same provider as with my previous orders . The cost of it with shipping charges  is $32 for a registered parcel and delivery was exactly  the same as with the previous times : 3 weeks exactly

The pack has been thrown immediately after the receipt of the package , for many reasons and with the help of a work mate I have made the first test , by putting the batteries of de108  into it . The first impressions were rather  bad except two important points  : The high selectivity on all bands  and the very low effects /spills from  strong FM signals on SW and FM  that cause loss of sensitivity on FM or produce garbage on SW

Inside the packing there are also earphones and a USB  cable for charging batteries it will be discussed on the end of this article

This  article is  comparison between  De17 108 and 1126

First the visible  comparison

The design of 17 is the replica of 108. The only visible difference  is only the color!

All buttons  have added features  comparing to 108.

-LCD  shows more features:

With radio powered  off, the  LCD  shows  time in HH MM SS  format, compared to HH MM  format of 108  .

Powered on ,the  frequency , memory and time is shown .

In frequency or memory change , for ca 5 seconds a tick  is heard every one second , this is due to signal check by the DSP .After this time the memory is shown IN the picture below the signal strength  is shown wit the antenna folded !

Have not tested  yet but I wonder if the signal strength is actual dbu units as shown in PL380 or 360 Not to mention  that  360 and  380 have different signal strength  (dbu) readouts!

-The former alarm (in 108) button is now used also for changing  SW bands. The frequencies are inside the bands for easier navigation

-The band button is now used for changing between  MW and FM

-Stereo /mono  switch is now used for antenna  change. By this way you can  either select between  the  telescopic antenna  or  the earphones ! IN practice for shortwaves the  telescopic antenna cannot do its job.

-The  volume control  is very smooth comparing to 108’s but with very low total volume. Its earphone volume is lower than the internal speaker’s . Consider  that 108’s volume control is very  huge even in the ¼ th of the turn !I could prefer  a compromise between these  two. This is the  reason  that 108’s batteries  could last  about 3 months with ca 3 hours per day of usage . 1600 mAh batteries used for first time have been dropped  to nearly the half after ca.20 hours of operation.

This  radio adds some more interesting  features

- 225 memories 100 for SW , 100 for Fm and 25 for MW

- ATS , battery charging

- and all in one DSP tech !!!

AM reception : (for both MW and SW ) comparisons with 1126

 - Narrow pass band , close to Degen’s De1126 ie  2 or 3 kHz  of bandwidth . This results to poor audio quality

- High self AGC that  amplifies internal circuitry’s noise  to quite high levels  in vacant frequencies. This 'garbage' may affect   poor to fair signals too (up to 25 dbu ?).

- Sensitivity  . Rather poor sensitivity Moderate signals  that can be heard clear with DE1126 can’t be heard with this radio As for example  my favorite station WaiFM on 9835Khz with  moderate signal (S7)  can be heard clearly with DE1126 but  cannot be received in DE17 Testing  the radio near to R75 or  coupled to horizontal antenna  I could  hear the station however

With newer tests de17 is close to 1102’s sensitivity. RTM  could be   received OK  and  weaker stations  cold be received

- FM spills   can .still  be  heard in shortwaves but in lesser level . Our antenna  farm is about 10 km from the center of the city. This  can happen using the  earphones as antenna  Most effected bands are 15-17mHz and the signal can come from  very nearby stations as eg 1431 kHz the students station of 500 W and  ca 200-500 m far.

- No overloading in shortwaves if connected  to external  wire antenna as with most DSP radios!!

- The AN 20 MW loop greatly enhances AM reception and cleans vacant frequencies from radio’s 'garbage'  (in contrast to 1126 that seems nearly non effected )

- Close sensitivity  between De17 and 108 in MW

FM reception

 - Sensitivity: Good . Most stations can be received in the city without unfolding antenna . The same occurs with more ‘DX’  signals as for example  Asteras  90.6 mHz a pirate station of signal ca 6 dbu (as shown on the LCD) from Veria ( direct distance of 40 km  ) ON 904 and 908  there are two signals of 40 dbu

- High  selectivity  as with DE1126 PL360 and PL380 due to DSP circuit verifies the above test on 90.6  .

- No loss of sensitivity due to strong signals as happened  with DE108  . All stations  are heard in the clear

- Once  I have found spark sounds on FM  near to generators

- Audio  is terrible with any class earphone tested . One of its worst  features

 Audio :

- Poor quality on Am due to narrow passband ,

- Rather  poor fidelity  on FM   using earphones . Very trebly with nearly no  bass . DE108 has more ‘linear’ audio response.

- Low earphone  audio levels (significantly  lower than DE108) The built in speakers have higher audio level. Full audio level is sufficient  in walking in the city

- Same speaker audio quality  with DE108 in FM

Earphones : Bad audio with lower volume than AKG 309 . Lacks  bass AND  cuts  higher trebles above 5kHz . Just by   using the   ‘bassy’  Sennheiser headphones the sound seems sufficient

Sleep  time : This is a new feature  compared to 108 . The sleep time can be  adjusted with radio switched off by pushing the  + or - button  from 0 (continuous) up to 90 minutes

Battery : this radio  drains much faster the battery than its predecessor De108 as notices above 20 hours of operation reduced 1600 mAh batteries to nearly half

USB  charge and batteries : the radio  can be charged via the supplied USB  cable.

Changing batteries can lead you to fake 'non-function' .

This is  what happened to me after changing batteries . On the start  I have used standard alkaline batteries . After reading in the users guide   that the radio can  operate with rechargeable batteries and  charge them,  I replaced the alkaline with rechargeable. I was  quite shocked looking at a  dead radio !! I thought  it was  my mistake to put one of these two batteries in reverse but I was  wrong . And finally I found that the  radio required a reset in order to work  properly !!

he reset button  in the rear part of the radio . ON 108  is in the same point!

A  notice about the cable . The radio does not  have the standard mini D USB socket as other recent Degen or Tecsun models,  but by following  the design of DE108,it  uses a classical rounded socket .

And the  funny of it , with positive pole in the ground as with most Chinese /Taiwanese gadgets!The cable  provided for charging is a USB to

Charging batteries is  very slow At 150 mA is 9 hours for charging 1300 mAh . I have put 2700 mAh batteries …

Verdict 3.5/5  : This  radio has a rather poor design and suffers from high levels  of inner garbage (as with 1126 ) in AM bands  with rather good sensitivity FM however is  quite better but it suffers from  lack of audio fidelity. This radio is like using a very strong engine  is a low class car!

I increased the  rating from 3 to 3.5 due to 17's AVC

Update : De17 as far as i understood from its operation , possibly  features audio normalization  (AVC). Compared to PL360/380  that have soft mute and the volume is dropped down. DE17  retains the volume in same levels even if soft mute is activated . Good move!

Degen DE108 radio review

The model is now [2019] nearly usseless . AM bands lost totaly their ensitivity while Fm audio i rather garbled..

Yet another radio I bought so many years ago when I had direct communication  with the company (Tecsun , its international distributor from Hong Kong )on mid 2000's that is very rarely used  .Just bought for its design and the  low price

It is a  slim , cassette sized PLL controlled  compact radio  with built in detachable antenna and  speaker as is shown  in the photos. Other features are shown in the end of this article  , clock  A ery nice design indeed and excellent for using it   your pocket

Here are everal pictures of the ardio

Herw are  the details

The LCD readout , acting also as  time .ON the right side are the alarm and the  time/alarm setting the mamory store and memeory up

Here are the  3.8 cm speaker , the power button (quite small  for my hands!) the step buttons , band (MW SW FM )and the  memory buttons

Ye locke m, volume and mono stereo switch

Tthe power supply   socket . The most awkward is the power supply  voltage is 5 V with positive curent on the ground (still more awkward mimicking 6 yeass ago the today's tech with USB voltage )

and the opposite  side showing  the rear speaker and the 2 Aa battery compartement

Here is  the results from what i tested
1 FM Poor selectivity
Poor to fair audio using the Sony MDR755 earphones.

2. MW: good   selectivity  and  quite good sensitivity . A tested with the AN 200 antenna , it can handle inductive signals from abt 20 cm far  when antenna is correctly tuned to a given frequency IN case for detuned antenna the signal is still receivable  for a broad range  of  freqs at least 150 kHz
Audio is generally poor with <3kHz span
Radio  produces  its own noise and is heard

My business  is on University. My office , full of fluorescent lamps, is  50 m from the antenna of   the students station   transmitted  on 1431 kHz . The station  is filtered to 2 9kHz steps inside the office. With air contact the range rises to 1390-1600!

3.SW : Poor to fair sensitivity and non properly filtered FM pass-through  . In Thessaloniki and Retziki where FM antenna farm  is abt 10 km far, with more than 40 FM and 25 TV channels ,   they produce  a fair-level constant background noise. Fortunately MW band  is quite well filtered so that  no spurs are detected from the  nearby transmitter  . . SW Signals can be heard only  with the detachable antenna and only fair and strong signals can be herd.
Earphone cable does not act as antenna

Buttons : 0.3-0.4 secs required to change a frequency
Memories : 30 total
Speaker: the speaker is 3.7 cm of diameter but sound is not good.
Alarm , dual clock and sleep timer are included

Update: regarding sensitivity I tested  also in Litohoron (My Olymp) of ca 80 km direct distance (and side-lobed signal ??)and found no hisses / noises on FM  neither on SW . That means , Thessaloniki’s  very close distance to the transmission point  of high signal powers overloads the radio

As for sound it compares to the PL550 in fidelity (tested with Carrefour ear buds  )

Update2:

After 6-7 years from  buying,   the radio has shown  two problems

Sensitivity loss:

On MW band (on which is more apparent ) nearly loses all its sensitivity but retains it after i push the case towards  the middle . that possibly means a soldering inside the circuit  has been broken .
Nearly the same has been shown  on SW  though lesser.  (due to antenna )
I have opened the case to inspect  the problem but most  components are SMD . The first  to help for that time was to unscrew the screws . but later the problem  appeared back.
I found that the problem is temporarily  retained if the area near to potentiometer is pressed by he thumb.

No problem has been  found in FM

Memory loss
All memories are  reset   especially in the cold  weather. and need  to re-enter them .

Degen 1102 : concerns of 3 items after 7 year of use !

This report has been written around  2013 aftrer 7 years of usage
and still seems to be valid as of 2023

Below you will rad a few notices for 3 radios bought directly from Degen.ONd of them as used by me while the remain two have been  given to my in laws who use the only in  FM . They are not interested in DXing.

1.In mine copy  AM mode in MW/SW has problems in the wide band filter  Otherwise  the radios plays OK  in all bands.

2a. In one of the  inlaws copies,  the battery compartment does not work We bought a new power adaptor. Its buttons are quite stiff
2b the second copy works only with inner batteries. IT cant work with power adaptor!

Degen DE1126 review

De 1126   a possibly exhaustive analysis of this radio

Degen 1126 is my latest radio from Degen and will be possibly the last radio. I found it from a Chinese seller in eBay recently quite known from his reputation over the years. The packet has been received in just 2.5 weeks via registered email.

This mini gadget cannot be considered solely as a radio as this is much more. It can operate also as a voice and radio recorder , mp3 player with 4 GB memory , removable disc and e-text reader! Don’t forget it is a radio fully implementing DSP technology . Its cost from this seller is only $45 plus $15 for postage to Greece

Its packing design is very nice . It has the feel of a thick book , and once is opened the radio is pulled from its left part . On the right part of this ‘book’ all accessories are enclosed inside a slippable box.

That includes : earphones , USB cable , a pocket guide written in quite good English , an British mains adaptor and a BL5C battery. The seller offers also a mini CD with instruction guides for all Degen models an the related firmware where applicable

And here are  several photos from the accessories:

the power adapter (using the English standard with short USB D plug  )

These are  the spare batteries  of Nokia BL5C

The BL5C battery is a clone of the original Nokia. Included on my order were 2 more batteries. One piece costs only $5 comparing to the $35 of the original as found in the Amazon stores Its capacity is 800 mAh  offering ca 10 hours of operation

The standard - classical - USB adaptor cable

Included on the packing there is also a CD  with manuals and firmware of all models from Tecsun and degen

My model is shpiied under the A/N of ……..and version 1.8 firmware with 4 GB of memory

Appearance :

1126 has an excellent  design . It is made with plastic case .Instead of the classical numerical keyboard it has a triple search function and most basic buttons for changing bands and frequencies (scan , band change )

During off operation or shut iff , th radio sown for ca 15 secs the time and the date

The loudspeaker is of 2 inch wide . It audio is fair with relatively good sound and quite strong for its size
ON the  top you will find the D plug , the earphone socket and the  microphone . Also there is space for comnnecting the strap

ON the rear  there is a stand , a battery  case and a reset button inside this battery case. But practically once you remoce te batter  a reset is made.

And it seems  this radio has also ROHS  approval :

Using the stand :
the stand is on the bottom ofthe  radio using it practically upright. As ou may also see there is  the tuning knob and the menu button on the irght side of this radio.

Earphones
: One of the drawbacks  of the company . I could expect a  top class  earphone as from this company the 929  earphones offered an excellent  audio. I contrast to it these  earphones  offer medium quality  audio  with much lower volume  level

All operations are menu and ‘explorer’ driven . The menu reminds the older MP3 players (USB stick type)of mid 2000s with thumbnail functions  . The ‘explorer’ is activated form the menu button of the right side of the radio with frequency knob to explore among the menu .

Here are the results of much time of operation :

Radio :

Display:

Its display is near to the above  , and dep3nding to the band used.

Tuning knob  : Itis OK to tune slowly . faster tuning  yield to no tuning as the radio drops up and down

FM
has fair sensitivity similar to PL200 (but less than 1102etc )and quite clear FM audio (better than PL200 but less than 1102 /1103). -Radio zones can be changed form the settings menu and include American world China Japan campus  (full bandwidth of 68-108 ,Hz ).
-Very good IF filter (selectivity ),better than any analogue receiver, also with 1103 . In my mountainous reception point crowded from 4-5 different transmission points it can better separate from any other radio from nearby stations.
-Signal indicator overestimates the real signal

-Stereo  reception requires only strong signals or monophonic could be heard
-And  earphone cable can also act as antenna
-But there is a tuning error  by 100 kHz. A low signal station  of 90.4 can be tuned properly in 90.5

AM filter : Very selective filter supposedly below 4 kHz that producing bad audio

MW : For to good sensitivity . tested to heard signals above S5 units on 16V /R75 . Frequency step is 9 and 10 kHz adjustable from the settings menu, but band  is the same  to 1710 kHz

Sensitivity in MW is nearly linear . Tested with PL360 signals in higher MW band are nearly the same ,but on freqs near to 500-600 kHz 1126 goes beyond 360’s sensitivity But I can be enhanced using the An200 loop . This loop can be connected directly to MW antenna input

The loop AN 20  tested to gewatly enhance reception . But due to radio’s high inernal noise , antenna  tuning is quite triclky that requires first to test to another radio  tand then using it.

SW: It has the feeling of the PL 200’s ACG , while jog or tuning ,. Very low signals can cause the radio to produce cracking sounds (signal dropouts ) that surely come due to the DSP technology . Not surprisingly the same happens while overloading (as for example to connect with an external antenna) . This happens  die to a nearby strong signal in MW of 50 kW . See blow for more
Tuning Step is by 5 kHz

Several radio menu options
- ATS  ie auto tuning system while I suddenly used it while listening to FM , I found that ATS  stored  all memories  until I pressed stop. IN ca 5 seconds it has stored more than 25 more memories !

- FM regions From the menu operation there are 3 regions: World (88-108) Japan  (76-90)   Student . the last and more strange mode offer the full  band on FM 68-108

- MW spacing : This  menu option  provides spacing between 9 and 10 kHz.

- recording with options to record either on 128 Wav or 40 kb MP3 ,look below

-delete memory or delete all memories

Testing with external antennas :

-Using the Tecsun reel antenna AN03 set to ca 2,5 m for SW , De 1126 highly overloadis across all bands In contrast PL360 , has some overload but reception is easier with better audio . But do not forget the ‘reception dropouts’ cause from near to marginal signals
-1 meter wire indoors does not overload the radio (on local afternoon )
Overloads : produced from the  strongest  signal , in my occasion from ERA  Thesaloniki 1179  kHz of 50 kW  with a distance  of ca 10 km producing signal of S9+40 db Though it nearly covers all bands  the strongest images  are in the 6-9 mHz bands. This happenened also on Litohoron with the radio being as high as possible by hand

Its severe drawbacks :
Signal Dropouts “ this is the most severe problem of this radio. Only strong signals in Am mode do not have signal dropouts that seem as very fast fading of signal that drops suddenly to marginal level  . There is also some minor level of dropouts in FM especially if signals are close to signal threshold .This also happens to PL360 but in quite lesser level. Can happen also to MP3 players that have radio optiom .
-High self noise only in the AM mode

Recording :
There are two ways to record : from menu  including selecting audio quality , or by pressing the rec button for 2-3 secs  while listening  to the radio .(the already set mode will be used )
From settings menu there are two options for recording audio quality : high quality (128) and low quality (96) that produce WAV files of 128 kbps and MP3 of 40 kbps respectively (????).

This photo  shows a recording process on radio;s screen. After saving  thee is a timestamp with time and date. (this can be found setting the  windows explorer  in detailed mode with creation date and time enabled  )

Actually the WAV format is ADPCM (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptive_differential_pulse-code_modulation) of 16 kHz with 16 kbit stereo as shown on VLC’s code analyzer, with moderate audio fidelity due to truncation /downsampling though audio is still quite pleasant

The picture below shows a spectrum screenshot from Aucdacity with the full  available  bandwidth. As you can see the spectrum is only 8 kHZ  ie half of WAV’s bandwidth!!

I wonder why they used  such formats and not directly a MP3 format  of same biterate.

MP3

The MP3 format is a analyzed as mode generic MP format with 8 kHz and 40 kb. But really the audio is very bad ,less than telephonic. For me this format  sounds as below 2 kHz of bandwidth. But strangely this format can offer much better  audio than this model offres. For example 40 kHz can do  perfect recording from older transistor radios!! As analyzed with Audacity this mode has only
1,5 kHz  bandwidth!!!

In voice recording there are three options
A standard recording  with WAV of 256.THis yields  to a 16 kHz audio
A fine option  with MP3 of 40
A remove silence( AMR ) option with WAV of 256 Wav

Radio recording drains faster the battery . Just 15 minutes of radio recording bar decrease the battery level by one bar from a fully charged battery (with the battery before any charge)! I found it imaginary level as after stopping recording and waiting a while the battery level returned to its ‘maximum’
Radio recording sets to a high preset output volume (for speaker of earphone )that cannot be adjusted. I found that the volume was set 20

The resulted files keep a creation timestamp (creation date and time) . It can be shown from the windows file explorer, set to the detailed mode and looking at date creation or modification.

Mp3 player
As audio player it supports Wav, MP3 and WMA  with great  sound similar to my Muvi;s .
And with ID 3 tags shown
Audio playback
It resumes the stopped  song
WMA  seems  not distorted  as in othermp3 players!
random playback: in two hours of playback i found 7 duplicates !!
ogg and mp4 does not play , same for WMA 64 . same happens for 48 kHz  sampling.
Ogg  seems to be supported but as far as  i tested did not play . It just shows the format on the bottom of the screen
File sorting : no sorting (FIFO ) The files  shown are as stored in the memory . New files are shown on the end.
There are several problems while playing with its built in speaker. There are  some  audio overloads causing very strong distortion and freezing the player . Just push the stop button or shut  down the radio and  the radio upside down  with the speaker  on the bottom  . IN several seconds  the radio will stop playing !! More recently I demonstrated  saved music material to someone and luckily this did nt  happen!
I found also that  Greek ID3 tags can be shown correctly, as well as  file names

Menu operations of mp3 playback :

When a song is played :
-equalizer modes: natural , rock, pop , classic , soft ,jazz wow and 3D sound.MOdes i am not interested  since the natural soound works better for me
- repeat : once, all ,  random (ie shuffle ) As in above  the shuffle mode plays many duplicates
- tempo rate /slow fast good for podcasts ,in order  to listen them faster or slower!
- lyrics (on off )
- repeat time
-repeat gap  (??)

When a  song Is paused or stopped are the explorer  functions
-local folder giving you the opportunity to look into 1126’s folders for audio files. Notie that the 'tuning' knob can explore files much  faster than scan for frequencies!
-delete : ie delete the stopped  song
-delete all

e-text reader
can play manually or automatically
IN manual mode  the tuning knob can act as page changer but an also act in auto mode
in auto mode you have to set the interval time (in secs)
greek text in Dos type character set is shown as Chinese !!

Interfacing/ Charging
The radio can be charged with its main power adaptor , using a mini USB plug. Upload speeds can be up to 1.7 /7.5 MB (with extension cable /direct cable ) download speeds from 25 but lowering down. For unknown reason I found that the cable (extension and choke ) was very hot after 7 minutes of connection

Battery & system resets
: The radio has been used for the first time ca 30 mins hour with some recordings of ca 15 mins , dropping the battery level by 1-1.5 bar.
About 2 months after the purchase and without any further use , the battery was exhausted , making the radio to lose the time and date indications and showing Chinese letters in the start up . It is quite nice that I know I few Chinese to adjust it back to English !!

As  i read from other texts , this is true . and comes from the radio's circuitry  . It can drain the batteries in ca 4 weeks
Reset can also happen if high moisture is present. I was in the bed using it over my body . Suddenly the radio stopped , and found that the radio was reset but shwing English text

As for result this mini radio is perfect for making live recordings (good for journalists ) as main operation although as Sw radio is also quite good Below you will find  some tests  with other radios
However i w could like to see these enhancements:
- 50 kHz  step on FM
- 1 kHz step on MW /SW
- lower circuitry inner noise
- not crashing while playing  music via the speaker
- correction of the ransom play
- and if possible to replace WAV with better  class MP3 encoding at any modes .I Propose them to check  the Creative Zen player which has line input and encodes in ral time in 96 and 128 kb

-------------

Other tests with 1126 and comparison with PL360
In MW 1126 has been fond having signal threshold of S5 units on R75 with 2x16 m invertd
1126’s SW reception can be enhanced in between metallic frames ! possibly more than other radios
FM sensitivity comparing to 1102: 1126 is quite less sensitive than 1102 though it has better station separation. Many stations audible as stereo on 1102 can be heard as monophonic on 1126
360 /1126 audio : PL360 has better audio fidelity than de1126 in FM and AM. (SW and MW )

Comparison with PL 200 :
De1126 seems having better overall sensitivity to PL200 in shortwaves . but 200 has better in 9mHZ
As for MW the refurbished PL200 goes better in the upper MW band
Using 1.2  m external antenna SW sensitivity levels are nearly the above.15 mHz are same , 200 outperforms on 9 mHZ , but on 11 17 and 21, 1126 goes better

And here some spectrum mesurements :

This is a FM station linear audio plot  :

this is a plot in a vacant frequency in FM :

This is a plot in a DRM  station in shortwave . It seems that  the AM filter abt 1.2 kHZ

And this is the  reception on a MW station NO other comment !

DE 1103 radio and DE1102 comparative test

Sorry again for all friends here , i have to put several reviews from grocities before Yahoo deleted them all!!

COMPARATIVE  TEST 1102 and 1103

1103 on the top middle

The 1103 has been bought on end of 2004 together with ordering a second 1102 for a beloved person. Because the delivery to the beloved person was urgent  I first compared  the 1102 with my older  ordred model , and more recently tested the 1103.

The 1103 in general was little more  bigger than1102  with a totally different approach in tuning,  volume etc  working with menu like indications

The 1103 uses the menu approach to do all its operations .It combines the operation of the wheel ( normally for tuning) with other buttons  to do :

1. Programmable stop time ., default off ,by using power and tuning wheel Maximum time: 99 mins
2. Volume level  by using battery /volume knob and tuning wheel Preset volume is 40 , maximum .MY Optimum volume levels are  8-12 max , with 8 in a quiet  environment when using headphones
3. Frequency  tune
4. Memories , recall and preset : . There are 268 memories shown in the  display  with their hexadecimal  number

Though much has been typed on both models I will just refer to some important differences in operation

Side by side FM test

Steps

1103 has steps of 25 kHz  while 1102 steps of 10 kHz ( in the special bank)

Images

1102  as in my older posting  shows images on the lower FM band by 21.4 (2x10.7) MHz  at a slightly lower level  . IN contrast to it 1103  even  connecting a 16m  antenna did not shown any images but just a  little  noise overload on the lower FM band . See below  for more

Sensitivity – selectivity

Sensitivity was difficult to measure as both radios were quite sensitive in FM

1103  was more selective in several  difficult  to tune stations on 1102. A station on of  106.8 MHz accurately tuned on 106.825 was  free from QRM

High self-noise

1103  found having noise across all Fm band . Due to high levels of  signals ( and more than 60 stations)  in Thessaloniki , this has been proven in a place near the greek , Albanian and FYROM  borders. It is a relatively low level noise that also produces stereo  QRN

Audio& bandwidth  :

Nice audio in both , however little more bassy on 1103  . Seems having relatively narrow bandwidth as highly modulated stations seems relatively  distorted , something that does not happen with 1102. This comes from the relatively narrow bandwidth thati can presume is 180 kHz

MW- SW

Side by side  sensitivity test:

This is a test to listen marginal signals outdoors by using diversity stereo reception as follows:

  • 1102 used with fully deployed antenna, 1103 deployed to  same length and using the earphones of the two DE1102 ( model DE919) .
  • Volume level set on a strong signal (1044 MW) so that  both earphones have  the same audio level.
  • Thus audio is heard at the middle of the two ears (what I mean here as audio-point) . .
  • If a signal is heard better in one radio, ‘audio point’ goes to the more sensitive radio.
  • If my theory  is wrong please let me know

Notice: 1102’s SW amplifier  shows ower gains on the 10-11 MHz  bands . And has been  tested in all 3 models ordered , and compared qith PL200 and 1103
As in result 1103 wins over 1102 in tems of  sensitivity or lower circuit noise.

More results:  1103  ATT switch offers high levels of attenuation. That does not happen on 1102 !

1103’s internal MW amplifier produces   higher gain levels towards higher frequencies

Images :

Overloads

1102 has images near 5500 and 8000 MHz
1103  found images near to 6300 , 14800 , 17900 Mhz

Also on 455   the freq is dominated by strong signal due toIF

Earphones DE929

The earphones   of the 1103  found to be the best ones I have  used , producing  ‘extended’  audio frequencies similar to Koss UR 23 headphones , ie at least 15 kHz is my ears, with a little different audio equalization . It seems with little higher middles and  little higher  trebles above the 8 kHz

Comparing to other  earphones I use , it produces the clearest and most linear audio . I have used more than 6 other earphones so far , from Aiwa’s . Sony etc

Following this , I ordered from the company a further 5 pieces  for using them on all my other audio sets ( radios , walkmans etc) at a factory’s  price is $5  each

 Connections :

Antenna :  the antenna  connection in my (early) model sown some great  attenuation comparing to the line in level of the 1102 . Here the big difference is that 1102’s antenna  is abt 5 m  in contrast to the 10 m of the 1103’s . However I preferred to  use the reel antenna of Tecsun PL200 with antenna clip on when I was in very clear environment ( I radio terms) on the Greek Albanian borders or even when I am in trips and beaches.

Headphones out : I always  use the radio with earphones and more recently using its De929 ones . Audio in generally is good but quite trebly.
