COMPARATIVE TEST 1102 and 1103
The 1103 has been bought on end of 2004 together with ordering a second 1102 for a beloved person. Because the delivery to the beloved person was urgent I first compared the 1102 with my older ordred model , and more recently tested the 1103.
The 1103 in general was little more bigger than1102 with a totally different approach in tuning, volume etc working with menu like indications
The 1103 uses the menu approach to do all its operations .It combines the operation of the wheel ( normally for tuning) with other buttons to do :
1.
Programmable stop time ., default off ,by using power and tuning wheel
Maximum
time: 99 mins
2. Volume
level by using battery /volume knob and
tuning wheel Preset volume is 40 , maximum .MY Optimum volume levels are 8-12 max , with 8 in a quiet
environment when using headphones
3.
Frequency tune
4. Memories
, recall and preset : . There are 268 memories shown in the display
with their hexadecimal number
Though much has been typed on both models I will just refer to some important differences in operation
Side by side FM test
Steps
1103 has steps of 25 kHz while 1102 steps of 10 kHz ( in the special bank)
Images
1102 as in my older posting shows images on the lower FM band by 21.4 (2x10.7) MHz at a slightly lower level . IN contrast to it 1103 even connecting a 16m antenna did not shown any images but just a little noise overload on the lower FM band . See below for more
Sensitivity – selectivity
Sensitivity was difficult to measure as both radios were quite sensitive in FM
1103 was more selective in several difficult to tune stations on 1102. A station on of 106.8 MHz accurately tuned on 106.825 was free from QRM
High self-noise
1103 found having noise across all Fm band . Due to high levels of signals ( and more than 60 stations) in Thessaloniki , this has been proven in a place near the greek , Albanian and FYROM borders. It is a relatively low level noise that also produces stereo QRN
Audio& bandwidth :
Nice audio in both , however little more bassy on 1103 . Seems having relatively narrow bandwidth as highly modulated stations seems relatively distorted , something that does not happen with 1102. This comes from the relatively narrow bandwidth thati can presume is 180 kHz
MW- SW
Side by side sensitivity test:
This is a test to listen marginal signals outdoors by using diversity stereo reception as follows:
- 1102 used with fully deployed antenna, 1103 deployed to same length and using the earphones of the two DE1102 ( model DE919) .
- Volume level set on a strong signal (1044 MW) so that both earphones have the same audio level.
- Thus audio is heard at the middle of the two ears (what I mean here as audio-point) . .
- If a signal is heard better in one radio, ‘audio point’ goes to the more sensitive radio.
- If my theory is wrong please let me know

Notice:
1102’s SW amplifier shows ower gains on
the 10-11 MHz bands . And has been tested in all 3 models ordered , and compared
qith PL200 and 1103
As in
result 1103 wins over 1102 in tems of
sensitivity or lower circuit noise.
More results: 1103 ATT switch offers high levels of attenuation. That does not happen on 1102 !
1103’s internal MW amplifier produces higher gain levels towards higher frequencies
Images :
Overloads
1102 has images
near 5500 and 8000 MHz
1103 found images near to 6300
, 14800 , 17900 Mhz
Also on 455 the freq is dominated by strong signal due toIF
Earphones DE929
The earphones of the 1103 found to be the best ones I have used , producing ‘extended’ audio frequencies similar to Koss UR 23 headphones , ie at least 15 kHz is my ears, with a little different audio equalization . It seems with little higher middles and little higher trebles above the 8 kHz
Comparing to other earphones I use , it produces the clearest and most linear audio . I have used more than 6 other earphones so far , from Aiwa’s . Sony etc
Following this , I ordered from the company a further 5 pieces for using them on all my other audio sets ( radios , walkmans etc) at a factory’s price is $5 each
Connections :
Antenna : the antenna connection in my (early) model sown some great attenuation comparing to the line in level of the 1102 . Here the big difference is that 1102’s antenna is abt 5 m in contrast to the 10 m of the 1103’s . However I preferred to use the reel antenna of Tecsun PL200 with antenna clip on when I was in very clear environment ( I radio terms) on the Greek Albanian borders or even when I am in trips and beaches.
Headphones
out : I always
use the radio with earphones and more
recently using its De929 ones . Audio in generally is good but quite
trebly.
